I’m going to be honest. I hadn’t washed my hair in weeks. Frankly, I expected to see a ton of buildup in my locs - especially after going that long without washing.

Not because I didn’t know better - but because life has been…life-ing. A lot. I’m preparing to retire from the Army after nearly 28 years, running a growing brand, and managing everything that comes with both - I was tired. And washing my hair just wasn’t high on the priority list (I know… sounds horrible - especially coming from a haircare professional)!

So, instead of forcing it, I decided to try something different.

I booked a head spa treatment. This is my second time experiencing one, and if you’ve never been, they actually analyze your scalp under a microscope before they start - so you can see exactly what’s going on at your roots!

And here's what I expected to see:

Buildup. Residue. A scalp that needed serious attention after weeks of…no attention. This is exactly why buildup in locs becomes such a common issue over time.

But when they pulled up the camera and started parting my locs…It wasn’t bad at all. In fact, there was almost none.

No heavy coating. No excessive product sitting on my strands. My scalp looked relatively clean, healthy, balanced - even after weeks without washing.

That moment stopped me.

Because this is exactly what I’ve been trying to communicate when I talk about residue-free haircare.

What made the experience even more memorable was the curiosity in the room. The women there- mostly Asian - were so intrigued. They asked questions, studied the structure, and genuinely wanted to understand how my locs formed and how I maintained them…all the details, along with the dos and don’ts.

It was such a beautiful exchange. Even though we didn’t speak the same language, I could feel their curiosity, their respect - and that little bit of “how does this even work?” A beautiful exchange.

But here’s the truth most people don’t realize:

With locs, buildup doesn’t just sit on the surface. It gets trapped inside.

Why Buildup in Locs Matters

Over time, buildup leads to:

• dullness

• dryness

• odor

• long-term damage to the integrity of the loc

• and yes…an unsightly appearance (think lint, masses of products and specks).

And most products? They weren’t designed for locs in the first place.

As a loctician, I’ve seen it for years.

That’s exactly why I created NVLX Labs - to offer clean, water-soluble products that actually rinse out, instead of coating the hair and staying behind.

That head spa didn’t just feel good - it confirmed something I already knew:

When your products are right, your scalp reflects it… long after they’ve been applied.

Clean scalp. Healthy locs. No buildup.

And sometimes…even a few weeks without washing won’t tell on you.

FAQs

1) Does buildup in locs go away on its own?

No, buildup tends to get trapped inside the loc over time. Using a residue-free, water-soluble cleanser or a detox helps remove it properly.

2) How do I know if I have buildup in my locs?

Specks or debris in the loc, dull appearance, heaviness, odor, or a coated feel are common signs. A scalp analysis can also reveal residue around the follicles.

3) What kind of shampoo should I use for locs?

Look for water-soluble formulas that rinse clean and don’t leave a coating on the hair.

If buildup has been a concern, start with products designed to rinse clean - without coating your locs.
